Cambridge Polymer Group, Inc., has developed several formulations of ultra high molecular weight polyethylene stabilized with Vitamin E, a naturally occuring antioxidant, for total joint arthroplasty. This patented technology, developed with Massachusetts General Hospital, exhibits extremely good wear properties, and has mechanical properties approaching that of virgin UHMWPE. Covered by multiple U.S. and foreign patents, these technologies have been cleared for use in hip and knee arthroplasty products in the U.S. and abroad. One formulation, termed generically as 'E-CIMA' (for vitamin E-Cold Irradiated Mechanically Annealed) can be produced at several commercial facilities for hip and knee replacements.
